About the Yarn

When a machine  is used for plucking fibre, it destroys the delicate hollow structure, leaving less quality and strength in the final yarn. At Renwick Royale we use hand plucked yarn exclusively, including a full 40% Possum fibre (some manufacturers include as little as 10%). When combined with 50% Merino wool and 10% Silk, this produces a far superior jacket for your devoted pet, and has several added advantages, including no pilling and little to no skin irritation.

About Possum

See full size imageThe Bushtail possum (not a direct relative of the American Opossum) was imported from Australia in 1837 to establish a fur trade in New Zealand. As time passed, a declining fur demand, coupled with the temperate NZ climate, sparked a massive increase in possum numbers. Possums are now considered a major pest, destroying our forests and competing with indigenous wildlife - many of which are under threat of extinction.

It is estimated that there are 70 million possums in New Zealand at present. Each night they eat around 20,000 tonnes of vegetation - their favourite meal being New Zealand natives trees. They also eat the eggs from bird’s nests, including the endangered Kiwi.

By purchasing products made with Possum fur you will not only have a luxurious, warm, soft garment, you will be helping to save New Zealand’s wilderness environment.

About Us

Lyn Norris picture My name is Lyn Norris. After escaping the hectic commercial life as a clothing retailer and an accountant in Auckland, my husband and I moved to Renwick, a small village set among the Marlborough vineyards, famous for its delicious white wines.

Though our province has the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand, in winter we have a very cold wind that whistles down the adjacent mountains and I often wear my favourite Possum/Merino jacket when out walking my old dog. This is lighter weight, but warmer than most other knitted garments. It also washes well, so it made sense to knit a dog jacket for my aging friend, as he too felt the cold. Many people asked where I bought his sweater and that’s how I came to start this business.
